For Parents

Parent Effectiveness Training

This life-changing program was created by Dr. Thomas Gordon, a clinical psychologist, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, 1998, and 1999. P.E.T. is an amazing set of communication skills that promote healthy connections and cooperation in the home. We love this philosophy and have come to realize that by teaching parents, we can break negative cycles and affect generations for the better.

How the Program Works

This intensive, proven program is taught only by instructors certified by Gordon Training International. The P.E.T. class consists of brief lectures, demonstrations, workbook exercises, activities, some homework, and small group discussions.

Each class participant will receive a set of P.E.T. materials which includes the 30th anniversary edition of the P.E.T. book, a P.E.T. Workbook, a Participant Certificate, and a copy of Dr. Gordon's Credo. This is a 24-hour program. Our group classes are taught as an eight-week series of three-hour classes.

What You Will Learn

~ How to identify who owns the problem so that you don't have to add to your stress necessarily
~ Why and how to avoid the roadblocks that stop communication and increase resentment
~ How to actively listen to students so they feel calmer and are able to solve their own problems
~ How to communicate when you are having a problem to give the offender an opportunity to remedy the situation without guilt or blame
~ How to solve problems fairly, meeting everyone’s needs, ensuring that the student is willing to assist and you do not need to waste time and energy being the enforcer
~ How to express gratitude to strengthen relationships and help grow a student's self-esteem instead of using manipulative judgement that keep the child in a powerless role
~ How to teach values in a way that increases the chance of students hearing, understanding, and adopting them

Because we feel strongly that children will benefit the most when parents and teachers are working together with the same skills, we are working with schools to provide both Teacher Effectiveness Training and Parent Effectiveness Training simultaneously.

If you would like to coordinate this profound program at your child's school, please email us or give us a call (720-336-9662); we would love to work with you and your school to schedule a program.

FAQ's

I read the book; will I get anything out of taking the class?
We love it when people come to class already having read the book! It allows us to go deeper into the details and really get to the heart of how to best help you. We're here as coaches, providing you with further insight to better help you. Other parents in class are on your team as well. The practices in class sharpen skills so that you can apply them with confidence in your home.

I haven't read the book; will I be able to keep up in class?
Not a problem! In each class, there is suggested homework reading from the book to reinforce what we discussed and practiced in our time together.

Only one of us can make it to class. will that be OK?
Consistently it is found that when one parent takes the class, that parent's relationship with the children improves and the lack of skills from the non-attending parent become more acutely felt. We strongly encourage both parents to attend so that they can both strengthen their relationships with the children - and each other.

We understand that sometimes scheduling and child care interferes with the ability for both parents to attend at the same time. We offer a discount for the co-parent of a graduate to reduce the second parent's tuition.

Is child care provided?
We love children (that's why we do what we do!); and in class we want to be able to focus on you parents. We do not have the space for children during class unless otherwise specified.
